With the righteous indignation an eagle wearing a three cornered hat, Tad Weed's Freedom Ensemble blazes forth, uninhibited by pesky rules. The ensemble includes some of the area's most accomplished musicians as well as nationally known artists, all of whom have a deep knowledge of the whole history of jazz, and this diachronic perspective informs much of the ensemble's music. Dedicated to the future, it is firmly founded in tradition; committed to improvisation, it is devoted to composition. Weed continuously brings in new material, some of it his own, and some composed by neglected masters such as Herbie Nichols. The group will be joined by celebrated woodwinds player Vinny Golia.
